PANAI VANAM THOOTHUKUDI
From One Crore Seeds to a Greener Future.
Our Mission 1 Crore Palmyra Seeds
The Palmyra is not just a tree — it is part of our land, water, culture and future. PanaiVanam is a community-driven movement to bring this native tree back to the landscapes where it belongs.

Five Lakh Seeds
Our mission is to scale proven field work into a five-lakh-seed Palmyra conservation mission.
About Panai Vanam
We Can has been working since 2012 to create a greener and eco-friendly environment in and around Thoothukudi. PanaiVanam is its focused Palmyra (Borassus flabellifer) conservation and propagation initiative.
The initiative focuses on restoring long-lived indigenous green cover around waterbodies, channels, bunds, suitable public lands and social-forest areas.
We Can’s work includes tree plantation, social forests, greening public spaces, plantation around waterbodies, environmental awareness, volunteer mobilisation and CSR-supported green projects.
One seed today. A tree for generations.
The State Tree
Palmyra is deeply connected with Tamil Nadu’s landscape and rural heritage.
It is a hardy, long-lived indigenous palm suited to dry and semi-arid conditions once established.
Strategic planting along suitable bunds and channels can strengthen permanent vegetative cover and help reduce soil erosion.
Mature Palmyra landscapes provide habitat and food resources for local biodiversity.
Palmyra has long-term socio-economic value through fruit, leaves, fibre and traditional products.
Living Landscapes
These photographs show mature Palmyra landscapes — waterbody edges, dense groves and traditional livelihoods — the long-term outcome PanaiVanam works toward through seed sowing in Thoothukudi.
Mature Palmyra along tanks and channels help hold the line of permanent green cover where soil and water meet.
A standing grove shows how clustered Palmyra can create lasting canopy and shade across dry, open land.
Once established, Palmyra endures seasonal flooding and semi-arid stretches — suited to Thoothukudi’s climate.
Beyond ecology, Palmyra supports rural tradition — fruit, leaves, fibre and climbing skills passed through generations.
Proven Field Work
PanaiVanam is built on actual field experience, not just a future proposal. Previous field records document large-scale Palmyra seed sowing across multiple locations in and around Thoothukudi.
2024–25 — 1,03,500 seeds sown
2025–26 — 1,36,500 seeds sown
Implementation
Palmyra fruits and viable seeds are sourced from farmers and collection points.
Collected material is moved to a processing / segregation point.
Fruits are opened, seeds separated and viable seeds selected.
Seeds are air-dried, counted and packed into manageable lots.
Suitable waterbody bunds, channels, public lands and project areas are inspected and selected.
Prepared seeds, workers and tools are transported to sowing locations.
Seeds are systematically sown according to site conditions.
Location, quantity and photographic evidence are recorded.
